This Monday, Mexico carried out its first historic lunar mission with the launch of the Peregrine Lunar Lander, with the objective of studying the natural satellite.

The Colmena Project, created by the Institute of Nuclear Sciences (ICN) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), will be able to explore and better understand the resources that the lunar surface can provide to humanity, that is, it will contribute to the first step towards transforming the Moon into a center of economic activity.

“With this project, the UNAM has become a pioneer in the development of space microrobotics, which is a technological area that will boom in the coming years, when space mining is promoted,” said the ICN through the social network X.

According to information provided by the Sputnik web portal, at 1:17am in Mexico City, the American Vulcan Centaur rocket manufactured by the United Launch Alliance (ULA) took off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying five Mexican microrobots that aim to study the lunar surface and dust as a possible source of minerals, water or precious metals.

The UNAM institute highlighted that the takeoff was successful, although the launch and landing of the mission are missing. This last step will take place on February 24, 2024.
