This Monday, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, will send to Congress a Plan B for electoral reform that seeks to reduce political costs and strengthen participatory democracy, after the rejection of the constitutional initiative.
The initiative envisages establishing maximum spending ceilings for local congresses, councilors and the Senate, measures that would make it possible to recover 223 million dollars, Telesur said.
The president during the press conference last Thursday, March 12, said that the central objective of this proposal is to eliminate privileges in political parties and in the National Electoral Institute (INE).
In this regard, Sheinbaum assured that those aimed at solving citizen needs in various demarcations of the country. This Plan B comes after the constitutional electoral reform was rejected in the Chamber of Deputies, despite popular support of more than 80 percent.
The new legal framework promoted by the Executive seeks to expand public consultations to electoral issues. It also proposes that the vote for the revocation of office be carried out during the third or fourth year of the six-year term.
This measure consolidates the right of the population to evaluate the performance of their rulers, strengthening popular participation in democratic processes in Mexico.
