This Wednesday, the federal government of Mexico, headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, formalized a strategic agreement with the steel and construction sectors aimed at strengthening domestic steel production.
Through this commitment, the Executive will substantially increase the acquisition of Mexican steel for the execution of public works projects, with special emphasis on the development of road infrastructure, roads and the country's railway network. The measure seeks to consolidate industrial sovereignty and ensure that state investment returns directly to the domestic productive apparatus.
Key actors from the private sector have joined this initiative, such as the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC) and the National Chamber of the Housing Development and Promotion Industry (CANADEVI).
Both institutions committed to prioritizing the purchase of materials produced in Mexican territory for their respective projects. This joint effort between the public and private sectors aims to generate a more robust value chain that benefits local workers and companies, reducing dependence on external supplies in strategic areas.
During the announcement, President Sheinbaum stressed that the central objective of this agreement is to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic steel industry and to progressively reduce imports.
In this regard, the president recalled that the government has implemented trade protection measures, such as the imposition of tariffs on steel from countries with which Mexico does not have trade agreements. These tariff policies act as a necessary complement to balance the market in the face of unfair competition and global production surplus.
With this road map, Mexico is committed to an economic development model based on domestic consumption and the strengthening of local manufacturing. It is expected that the prioritization of Mexican steel in the major works of the six-year period will not only accelerate the growth of the industrial sector, but will also act as an engine for generating specialized employment.
The agreement marks a precedent in the country's economic policy, aligning state infrastructure objectives with the technical and operational capacities of the national steel industry.
