This Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) of Mexico announced the official authorization by the Council of the European Union for the signing of the Modernized Global Agreement, which will be signed on May 22 in Mexico City.
This new legal framework seeks to deepen ties between Mexico and the 27 member states of the European bloc, establishing an updated road map to face global challenges in terms of cooperation and economic development more than two decades after the original pact.
“This agreement represents a historic step in bilateral relations, strengthening the pillars that unite us with Europe at a strategic moment for our foreign policy,” said Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco.
The official stressed that the modernization of these instruments will allow for a deeper and more efficient integration, adapting the rules of the game to the technological and social realities of the 21st century for the benefit of both regions.
The original pact of the year 2000, which was a pioneer in Latin America, is now renewed to govern not only commercial exchange, but also political dialogue and technical cooperation programs. With this signature, Mexico positions itself as a priority partner for the European Union, facilitating investment flow and mutual protection in key sectors, while ensuring a solid legal framework that provides certainty to economic actors in the 28 countries involved in the treaty.
The foreign minister stressed that the May summit will be the definitive stage for consolidating this diplomatic effort that has taken years of negotiation. “The Modernized Global Agreement governs political, cooperation and trade relations; it is a testament to our shared vision of progress and stability,” concluded Velasco.
