MINAGUAS carries out risk mitigation works in Apure

The Ministry of the People's Power of Water (MINAGUAS) through the Venezuelan Hydrological System (HIDROVEN) designed a route of preventive and efficient actions framed in the National Plan for Mitigation of Flood Risks and Related Effects to the Global Climate Crisis, carried out in the Apurea region in the face of the rainy season 2026.

The work plan included a deployment in the municipalities of San Fernando, Biruaca, José Cornelio Muñoz, José Antonio Páez and Rómulo Gallegos in the Apure state, designed to mitigate periods of rain in Venezuela.

The deployment includes work that ranges from the construction of a containment slope, maintenance of channels and lagoons, installation of stationary pumping equipment (dewatering pumps), to the rehabilitation of rainwater drainage systems.

In the municipality of San Fernando, specifically in the 23 de Enero community, the construction of a containment slope located on the bank of the Apure River was carried out with the placement of 2,000 1-ton sandbags to prevent the body of water from overflowing during the period of heavy rains. In turn, the oxidation lagoon was dredged with long arm jumbo heavy machinery located in the vicinity of the town, in order to recover its storage capacity, eliminate accumulated sludge and restore treatment efficiency.

In the Andrés Bello sector, belonging to the “Guerreros de Cristo” commune, also in the municipality of San Fernando, a rainwater drainage system is being built, consisting of the installation of 200 m of 8-inch diameter concrete collector. Work that optimizes the rainwater and wastewater collection system, preventing floods and protecting roads in rainy seasons, also guaranteeing care for 1,314 families.

In addition, the maintenance of the main waist and secondary channels achieved a positive percentage of progress in San Fernando, where a total of 12.05 km were cleared, as well as in Biruaca, where a total of 0.75 km has been carried out. On the other hand, in the municipality of Muñoz, a total of 3.02 km was achieved, in the municipality of Romulo Gallegos with 2.65 km of cleaning, and finally in Páez, 19.67 km of clearance. This shows a percentage of 83% compared to the state, resulting in significant improvements in the operation of drainage systems and the correct performance of the regional hydraulic infrastructure.

These prevention and maintenance works seek to optimize these systems in the face of heavy rainy seasons, making it possible to directly guarantee the well-being and quality of life of 70,210 families belonging to 47 communes of the entity, providing them with security in the face of changing weather conditions.

In turn, to mitigate the risks of river flooding in the José Antonio Páez municipality, stationary pumping systems were installed at the “Barra Vieja” pumping station in the Guasdualito parish, with capacities between 100 and 150 HP. In the same way, a 150 HP vertical equipment was installed in the La Playita sector with a capacity of 70 HP to serve 3,470 families.
