The Minister of Popular Power for Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez, reported that in Mochima Bay, Sucre state, a scientific project aimed at understanding primary productivity and carbon storage capacity in mangroves is progressing.
The minister explained that the Marine Research Station team of the Institute for Advanced Studies Foundation (IDEA) develops analyses of physico-chemical and biological variables to study the functioning of these ecosystems. He indicated that the research evaluates how periods of rain and drought affect mangrove productivity and its potential to capture carbon.
Jiménez pointed out that mangroves play an essential role in protecting coasts against waves and storms, in addition to contributing to the mitigation of the climate crisis through natural carbon storage.
The minister stated that, following the guidelines of the president in charge Delcy Rodríguez, the Ministry of Popular Power for Science and Technology generates key scientific knowledge to safeguard life and biodiversity in the country.
