The Minister of Popular Power for Ecosocialism, Ricardo Molina, reported through his official Telegram channel that the Operational Committee for Control in forests and wastelands has been activated throughout the country, as part of the campaign “Christmas without moss, in peace and with sovereignty”, with the objective of preventing the extraction and commercialization of plant species used in births and Christmas decorations.
Molina indicated that operations will be carried out in areas with the highest incidence of extraction, such as El Junquito in Caracas, Colonia Tovar in Aragua and in the states of Miranda, Táchira, Mérida and Trujillo. The actions focus on the protection of mosses, lichens, bryophytes, tree ferns, wooden beards, frailejones and bromeliads.
He recalled that resolution 000175, published in the Official Gazette No. 40,305 of November 29, 2013, establishes the prohibition of the extraction, transport, commercialization and exploitation of these species, due to their role in water regulation, the prevention of erosion and the conservation of biodiversity.
Molina specified that those who commit these environmental crimes will be punished under article 154 of the Forest Law, with fines of between 3,000 and 10,000 fiscal units, in addition to the obligation to attend five educational talks or carry out socio-environmental work under the supervision of the competent authorities.
The minister urged the population to respect current legislation and to contribute to the protection of ecosystems during the Christmas period.
