The National Service for Comprehensive Care for Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI) confirmed that a total of 178 people, including prison guides and administrative staff, remain hostage in several prisons in Ecuador, the Sputnik website reported.

He assures that this is due to the wave of violence unleashed by organized criminal groups that forced the Government to establish a state of emergency and declare an internal armed conflict.

“Due to the alterations and incidents in the prison system, security operations and protocols are currently being maintained to release 158 prison security officers, as well as the 20 members of the administrative service staff who are being held in the El Oro No.1 Deprivation Centers; Cotopaxi No.1; Loja No.1, Azuay No1; Tungurahua No.1; Cañar No2, and Esmeraldas No.2", SNAI said in an official statement.

Another incident took place in the No.1 deprivation center in the province of Esmeraldas No.1, in the early morning, where a group of prisoners shot at Armed Forces personnel who were outside, who reacted to control the situation, according to SNAI, although without providing further details.

On January 10, Ecuador experienced another violent day, with the report of a death when an artifact exploded in a nightclub in the province of Orellana (Amazon) and explosions in a Community Police Unit in the south of the city of Quito, capital of the country and of the province of Pichincha.
