More than 48,000 hectares of native forests, plantations and homes have been consumed by forest fires in Patagonia Argentina, said Hernán Giardini, coordinator of the Greenpeace Argentina Forest campaign.

Argentina's Andean-Patagonian forests are facing the worst forest fires in the last three decades,” Giardini warned.

According to reports, the burned area is enormous and it is estimated that recovery could take nearly 200 years.

The situation is worsened by the drought caused by the La Niña phenomenon , which has generated a shortage of rainfall in Argentina.

The fires will not be completely extinguished until the rainy season arrives at the end of March, according to a press release from the Venezolana de Televisión (VTV) website.
