The Public Ministry (MP) issued a statement informing the country that this Saturday, January 10, 2026, a citizen who was in detention died while receiving medical care at the Dr. Domingo Luciani Hospital, the MP reported on his Instagram account.

The letter states that this is Edilson José Torres Fernández, 52 years old, who served as an active official of the Bolivarian National Police (PNB), and had been detained since December 11, 2025, under the order of the Second Control Court with competence in Terrorism of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas, as part of the case related to criminal activities detected by State security agencies.

The Public Ministry informs the country that on January 10, 2026, a citizen who was in detention died while receiving medical care at the Dr. Domingo Luciani Hospital.

This is Edilson José Torres Fernández, 52 years old, who served as an active official of the Bolivarian National Police (PNB), and who had been detained since December 11, 2025, under the order of the 2nd Control Court with jurisdiction in Terrorism of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas, in case 2CT-S-133-2025, related to criminal activities detected by State security agencies.

In view of these facts, the Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigations Corps and the 13th Public Prosecutor's Office for Human Rights were ordered to intervene, who determined that the citizen had a sudden decompensation of health, so he was immediately transferred to the healthcare center, admitted with vital signs and being treated in a timely manner by medical personnel. However, he suffered a cerebrovascular event followed by a cardiac arrest, which resulted in his death.

The Public Ministry reaffirms its firm commitment to the defense of life, legality and human rights, and will continue to act with absolute transparency and institutional rigor in the face of any act involving persons in State custody.
