The president of the National Academy of Medicine, Huníades Urbina, assured that there is currently no health alert for hantavirus in Venezuela.
In this regard, he reiterated that, after making the relevant evaluations, there is no evidence that the virus is circulating in the national territory, reported the Latest News portal.
The specialist also indicated that there is a difference between hantavirus and COVID - 19 or with measles. “Person-to-person contamination is not as frequent or severe,” said the specialist, explaining that the main vector of infection are rodents and their excreta,” he explained.
He said that those who have recently visited other South American countries should remain vigilant, since symptoms can appear even “40 days after infection.”
Urbina also recommended that the general population take the necessary preventive measures to prevent rodents from entering the home, including sealing cracks and maintaining corresponding hygiene, especially in those areas where the existence of such contagion vectors is suspected.
The specialist emphasized that since it is not a global problem or one that is easily transmitted between humans, the key is prevention and especially cleaning in spaces prone to rodent reproduction.
