The National Art Gallery (GAN) announced the celebration of its 50th anniversary with the inauguration of the exhibition “Historical Continuity — Overlapping Times: New Readings of Venezuelan Art”.
The exhibition establishes a direct dialogue with the museum's collection, combining works from different periods to highlight historical processes that were relegated by approaches focused on “avant-garde” or “novelty”, according to a press release from the Ministry for Culture.
Inspired by the vision of Ticio Escobar, the proposal proposes a critical reading that questions the idea of a linear evolution of art, showing the coexistence of traditional and contemporary elements in the same space.
The Research Department notes that ignoring these visual tensions reduces history to a decontextualized vision, so the exhibition promotes a broader understanding of national artistic development.
The exhibition also seeks to identify the public with these dynamics, by promoting a view based on cultural sovereignty and the reinterpretation of the patrimonial legacy.
As part of the commemoration, the GAN pays homage to its extensive collection, where works by Arturo Michelena and Cristóbal Rojas are linked to the creations of Armando Reverón and more recent expressions.
This anniversary marks a milestone in the history of the institution, which renews its role in the conservation, research and promotion of the national artistic heritage.
