This Tuesday, in Chile, the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED) reported that several regions in the south-central area of Chile are suffering massive power cuts, as well as intermittences in mobile phone services.
“At the time of this report, there was a massive power outage, affecting the territory between the regions of Arica and Parinacota and Los Lagos - Alteration of electricity supply (preliminary),” SENAPRED published on the social network X.
Around 20 million people were affected by the cuts in the Santiago Metropolitan Region starting at 03:15 (local time), which affected mobile phone service, public transport, automated payments, and others.
As a result, public transport collapsed in the country. The Metro train system suspended operations due to the widespread blackout, causing crowds at bus stops.
For its part, Santiago de Chile Airport (Nuevo Pudahuel) reported on social networks that it has activated its backup systems, which allows it, for now, to maintain the regular operation of flights.
