National Government begins evaluation and technical restoration of Maracay Cathedral after structural damage

The National Government, together with the mayor's office of the Girardot municipality in the state of Aragua, began evaluating the structural damage suffered by the Cathedral of San José de Maracay, an architectural icon and a center for family and religious reunion, following the earthquakes of last June 24.

According to a press release, the burgomaster of that town, Rafael Morales, assured that the approach involves an immediate intervention that includes calculators, draftsmen and all the technical equipment necessary to carry out the survey. He also stressed that, “the construction and restoration process cannot be purely functional, but also aesthetic with the objective of preserving this architectural and religious icon of the capital of Aragüeña,” he added.

For his part, the engineer Jesús Mejías, responsible for evaluating the damage, explained that they are in front of a very old structure that, although solid, presents elements of fragility in the face of earthquakes. The specialist pointed out that the commitment of the body of engineers is to “provide a structural solution that maintains the original architecture and aesthetics” to preserve the greatest possible originality of the enclosure.

Finally, the local president stated that the deployment of technical supervision immediately extends to other historical monuments such as the Maestranza César Girón, the Casa de los Arcos and the Concha Acústica. Referring to the situation of these emblematic points, Morales emphasized that “the icons, the gentility and these wonderful structures of our city of Maracay stand firm.”
