Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, ordered his cabinet to refrain from submitting bills related to the annexation of the occupied West Bank. The decision was made after the President of the United States, Donald Trump, warned that carrying out such a measure would mean the loss of Washington's support.
The change in position comes after the express rejection by Arab governments and US authorities of the plan promoted by Israeli parliamentarians. The proposal was presented on Wednesday in the Knesset, prompting immediate reactions from the international community.
During a public statement, Trump reiterated that he will not allow annexation, stressing that his commitment to Arab countries prevents progress in that direction. “Israel would lose all U.S. support if that happened,” he said.
For his part, US Vice President James Vance considered that the parliamentary vote was an erroneous political measure. Netanyahu's cabinet attributed the initiative to sectors of the opposition that, according to him, seek to generate tensions during the vice-president's official visit.
