China has urged the United States to immediately release Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Sunday, according to the Xinhua news agency.

The spokesman issued these statements after the United States sent forces to kidnap Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and took them out of the country, and the governments of several nations have spoken out against it.

China expresses serious concern about the forced capture of Maduro and his wife by the United States and their removal from the country, the spokesman said, adding that the action constitutes a clear violation of international law, of basic norms in international relations and of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

China calls on the United States to guarantee the personal security of Maduro and his wife, release them immediately, put an end to attempts to overthrow the Government of Venezuela and resolve problems through dialogue and negotiation, the spokesman said.
