Of the 2 billion dollars allocated by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to assist Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, only 2% (50 million dollars) was allocated to local institutions, as highlighted by a report by the New York Post newspaper, which revealed that more than 50% of these resources were channeled to companies located in Washington and surrounding areas.
In Haiti, activists criticized the lack of clarity in the management of these USAID funds. According to the complaint, no precise details were provided about the use of the money allocated to the reconstruction of the country after the devastating earthquake.
The 2010 earthquake disaster left Haiti in a desperate situation, with more than 200,000 deaths and its infrastructure in ruins. International aid raised hopes for recovery, but the distribution of funds has caused controversy, according to a press release from Venezuela News.
This report brings back to the table the discussion about the efficiency of global assistance and highlights the importance of giving priority to local entities in times of crisis.
