Last Sunday, Nigerian military and government officials reported that more than 130 children were rescued who had been abducted two weeks ago from a school in the state of Kaduna, in the northwest of the country.

School authorities had informed the state government that a total of 287 students had been abducted during the attack on the remote Kuriga school on March 7.

The governor of Kaduna clarified that 137 young people were kidnapped. These variations in reporting are common in the kidnapping crisis in Nigeria due to deficiencies in records or hostage escapes soon after the kidnapping.

Since 2014, at least 1,400 students have been kidnapped from Nigerian schools, especially in the country's central and northwestern regions, where armed groups frequently attack villagers and travelers demanding ransom.
