The under-23 women's national wrestling team will begin the search for medals in the World Championship category, which is held in the city of Novi Sad, in Serbia, with a team led by Pan-American youth medalists Astrid Montero, Alexa Álvarez and Nohalis Loyo in freestyle mode.
Prior to his departure to European soil, coach Víctor Moya Fernández stressed that in addition to seeking medals, the team will take advantage of its participation in the world championship to continue preparing for the Bolivarian Games to be held in the cities of Lima and Ayacucho, in Peru, between November 22 and December 7.
“It's a great experience working with these girls who, despite being young, are very talented and with the drive and desire to be champions. Among our expectations in the world cup is that we can win several medals and take it as preparation for the Bolivarian Games,” said the strategist after training.
In this regard, Falconian Astrid Monter pointed out that despite not achieving the proposed results in the senior World Cup held last month in Croatia, the accumulated experience between that competition and the Simon Bolivar International Wrestling League helped the fighters to grow in confidence in the face of international commitments.
“The preparation has not stopped since we arrived from the Pan American Games, then with the adult world cup and although the results were not as expected, we did our best and the International Wrestling League helped us a lot to get ready for this world cup and gain confidence for everything that is to come,” said the 22-year-old girl.
Men's team
As far as the men's team is concerned, wrestlers José Falcón and Víctor Parra will be the representatives in freestyle, while Greco-Roman wrestling began with the participation of Brayan Ruiz, Dieymer Rosas, Juan Díaz and Luis Talavera.
Ruiz was the most outstanding fighter at the start of the competition after finishing in the 87-kilogram quarterfinals after giving up 2-1 to Poland's Yassine Ben Labed.
Previously, the Pan-American bronze medalist beat Finnish Elías Johannes 5-1 in the eighth round; while Rosas fell 6-4 against Kazakh Yerassyl Mamyrbekov (55 kg), Díaz 5-3 against German Darius Kiefer (97 kg) and Luis Talavera 5-1 against Czech Artur Sarkisjan (130 kg) in the qualifiers.
