During the regular session this Tuesday, deputies from the opposition bench in the National Assembly (AN) expressed their support for the agreement in support of the comprehensive defense of the territory of Guiana Essequiba and the legal strategy of the Venezuelan State before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
In his speech, the deputy of the Democratic Action (AD) party, José Gregorio Correa, ratified his rejection of the illegal arbitration award of 1899 and his recognition of the Geneva Agreement of 1966.
He emphasized that this award is not recognized by the current generation, and that it will not be recognized by future generations, thus reaffirming Venezuelan sovereignty over Guiana Essequiba.
He considered that the defense of the Essequibo is an obligation of all Venezuelans, since it is a historical and geographical heritage. Correa also supported the appearance of the President in charge of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, in The Hague.
“The presentation that was made in The Hague is what we had to do, the one we made and the one we are going to continue to do,” he said.
Deputy Luis Rondón emphasized that the Geneva Agreement of 1966 constitutes the express recognition of Great Britain that it had acted irregularly against Venezuela, as well as the recognition of Guyana, whose prime minister, even in a context of late decolonization, signed that instrument.
He stressed that the agreement establishes the bilateral search for a satisfactory solution for both parties. Rondón expressed his support for the actions of the President in charge of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, before the International Court of Justice, by making clear the historic nature of the Venezuelan position.
For his part, the opposition deputy Antonio Ecarri, assured that Venezuela is the only nation that can guarantee sovereignty and stability to foreign investors in the Atlantic Façade.
Ecarri repudiated that the government of Guyana is exploiting the resources found in the disputed territory, including maritime projection within Venezuelan territory, violating all international agreements and treaties.
