The University of Oxford, through the Blavatnik School of Government, in the United Kingdom, expressed, through a report, that the recent military aggression carried out by the United States against Venezuela constitutes a flagrant and multidimensional violation of international law.

The co-director of the Oxford Institute of Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict (ELAC), Janina Dill, led the report, stating that the nature of the attack lacks any legal justification under current international treaties.

According to the analysis released by Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), the use of force in this context is not only illegal, but its illegality is “beyond any serious debate”. The report stresses that the intervention breaks with the fundamental principle of state sovereignty and the prohibition of the use of force, pillars of the international order since 1945.

For this reason, Oxford warns with concern that the lack of a strong international reaction could normalize the use of military force as a substitute for diplomacy, returning the world to a state of legal insecurity where the law of the strongest prevails.

“The way in which the world reacts to this rupture is critical. It's not just about the sovereignty of a nation, but about the survival of the legal system that prevents anarchic global conflict,” the technical analysis points out after calling on international organizations to reaffirm the validity of global norms in the face of acts that threaten to dismantle decades of diplomatic consensus.
