The president of the Parliamentary Friendship Group of the National Assembly (AN) with the European Union (EU), deputy Jorge Arreaza, as well as several members of this body, received this Thursday at the Legislative Palace the director for the Americas of the European Foreign Action Service (EEAS) in Brussels, Pelayo Castro.

From the Venezuelan Parliament, Arreaza stated that the friendship group has been working on the proposal to create a European parliamentary group that can join to listen to proposals, as well as to develop joint development projects.

“It's about having a counterpart of European parliamentarians who can interact with us, create a program of parliamentary cooperation, a program of joint parliamentary diplomacy,” said Jorge Arreaza.

He said that the deputies who make up the friendship group seek to join forces with European peers, in order to “generate proposals for our governments. We want to help guarantee governance and peace in Venezuela, the national union at this time and we are betting that Europe hears our voices and we can contribute, based on working together, to stability in Venezuela and economic recovery,” said the deputy.

He also stressed that European investment is fundamental for the nation “and the parliamentarians and parliamentarians of this National Assembly want to promote this broad investment”.

Arreaza also proposed addressing the issue of migration, the return of Venezuelans through the Great Mission Back to the Fatherland, as well as the exchange of knowledge, education, culture and science. “In this regard, the National Assembly can give a lot,” he added.

Pelayo Castro, for his part, thanked the holding of this meeting, which, in his opinion, is a very important gesture and visit for the European Union, “and I think the National Assembly could not be missed”.

He added: “We must mark this visit in a new phase for the country and, therefore, of Venezuela's relations with the world. This offers an opportunity for everyone. Governance is very important, it is part of the European DNA (...) We cannot but agree with the development of the country's economy.”

Castro assured that all the proposals of the Venezuelan friendship group will be delivered personally to the European Parliament.

The vice-president of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the European Union, MP Ilenia Medina, took the floor and welcomed this meeting and stated that the rapprochement with the bloc is fundamental and, in addition, “it is historic”.

In the same way, the deputy of the opposition bench, Timoteo Zambrano, stressed that Venezuela is committed to stability and to promoting effective relations with the European Union.

For the European delegation, Castro was accompanied by the EU's chargé d'affaires in Venezuela, María Antonieta Calvo; as well as Adriana Vázquez Garrido, head of the South American Division of the European Foreign Action Service (EEAS), among other authorities.
