Peru on high alert for torrential rains

The National Meteorology and Hydrology Service of Peru (SENAMHI) issued a short-term warning of a red level alert (extreme danger) due to the activation of ravines (huaicos) in 17 of the 24 existing departments, due to the fall of torrential rains.


“Red level alert: danger of the possibility of activating ravines (huaicos) of extreme severity, caused by heavy rains in unstable areas,” SENAMHI said in a statement released by the Sputnik agency.


Local authorities reported that the central departments of Lima, Ucayali, Pasco and Junín are at extreme risk of disaster, as well as the southerners of Apurimac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica, Moquegua, Madre Dios, Puno and Tacna.


In addition, the northern departments of Cajamarca, Huánuco, Lambayeque and Piura are at greatest risk.
