The National Association of Journalists of Peru (ANP) issued a strong rejection of the threats made by congresswoman Kira Alcarraz, of the right-wing Podemos Peru party, against local media reporter Marycielo Del Castillo.

The Telesur portal reported that the confrontation occurred at the exit of Congress, after Del Castillo asked the legislator about the alleged irregular hiring of her son's partner in her parliamentary office.

“If I were upset, rest assured, I would stamp you against the wall. But since I'm not upset, that's why you're still alive,” Alcarraz told Del Castillo as she left parliament.

Del Castillo called the incident an “unacceptable lack of respect” and a threat not only against her, but against the voters she represents.

“Today, Congresswoman Kira Alcarraz made a threat, not against me, but against her constituents. All authorities are subject to scrutiny and our role as journalists is to ask questions on behalf of the people. This is an unacceptable lack of respect,” the reporter said.

For its part, the ANP rejected the statements of Congresswoman Kira Alcarraz and highlights the climate of hostility and repressive politics faced by the press in Peru.
