The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has publicly denounced what he considers to be signs of U.S. interference in his country's electoral process, in reference to the frequent visits of Colombian leaders to Washington.
The Colombian head of state stated on social media that these trips respond to the interest of the U.S. government in influencing the Colombian electoral contest. He stressed that this type of action is already unprecedented and called for elections to be held without external pressure.
“Wrong. We already know the mechanism in dollars. So the president of Colombia must guarantee free elections in Colombia and asks all the Colombian people to keep a free spirit and shout Colombia Libre,” he wrote on his social networks.
Petro made these statements after learning about the trip of the governor of Antioquia, Andrés Julián Rendón, who announced a schedule of meetings in the United States by official invitation.
The statement comes in a context of recent tensions between Petro and the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who described the position of the Colombian leader as “hostile”. Petro harshly criticized the bombings carried out by U.S. forces in the Caribbean and the Pacific, operations that caused victims in the region.
