The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, said that the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, is promoting a hostile climate against progressive leaders in the region. In his opinion, this climate is reflected in the judicial processes that led to the imprisonment of Pedro Castillo in Peru and Luis Arce in Bolivia.
Petro said that his country has been surrounded by imprisoned leaders as part of a strategy to curb similar political projects in Latin America, while recalling that Castillo is serving an 11-year sentence for the failed attempt to dissolve the Peruvian Congress in 2022, while Arce is in preventive detention while an investigation is being carried out for alleged embezzlement of an indigenous fund.
The president also reacted to the presidential elections in Chile, where he expressed concern about the victory of candidate José Antonio Kast in the second round. Petro argued that the advance of extremist positions in that country will not have the same historic duration as the Pinochet dictatorship.
According to what was published by Sputnik, Kast will assume the presidency in March 2026, after obtaining 58% of the votes compared to 41% of the candidate of the ruling party, Jeannette Jara.
