The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, officially announced the suspension of the signature collection process aimed at convening a National Constituent Assembly. This initiative, which emerged as a way to deepen essential social reforms in labor, pensions, public services and education, was initially proposed in the face of what the president described as a persistent inaction on the part of the Congress of the Republic in the face of the transformations proposed by his administration.
In justifying this decision, the head of state pointed out that the measure responds to a “deep civic division” and to the urgent need for the Colombian people to define, through electoral mechanisms, their majority and the political destiny of the nation.
Petro warned of a latent “danger of returning to the methods of violent fascism”, assuring that this threat jeopardizes both the social achievements achieved by his Government and the stability of Colombian democracy.
The president emphasized that, in the face of this scenario, the absolute priority of his administration is for citizens to define the course of the next government at the polls. According to the president, the future of social reforms, both those that have already been implemented and those that are currently being processed or projected, depends directly on the mandate that the electorate gives to the country's next leadership within the framework of the democratic debate.
With this decision, the National Government closes a chapter of great political controversy and reorients its strategy towards electoral confrontation. The Petro administration is now seeking that it is the popular vote that validates the reform program, betting that the debate on the future of the country will be decided in the scenario of the presidential elections, thus consolidating the path for the continuity of the social projects proposed since the beginning of its term of office.
