In Ecuador, the police repression ordered by the government of Daniel Noboa against peaceful demonstrations intensified on the second day of the 2025 National Strike, with at least 59 arrests reported by the Ministry of the Interior.
The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) requires the repeal of Decree 126, which eliminated the diesel subsidy, raising its price from USD 1.80 to USD 2.80, in addition to solutions to insecurity, unemployment, the public health crisis and the increase in VAT from 12% to 15%.
It is known that in downtown Quito, students and workers marched from the Social Security Fund to the Plaza de Santo Domingo, demanding the resignation of Daniel Noboa.
In the town of Otavalo (Imbabura), police repression escalated with allegations of abuse by the Intervention and Rescue Group (GIR). Conaie reported the arbitrary and violent arrest of Gina Betel Cahuasquí, a peaceful protester surrounded, pushed and arrested after complaining about the throwing of tear gas bombs.
