Pope Francis visited a prison in Rome this Holy Thursday as one of his public days during Holy Week. The 88-year-old pope arrived at the prison and was greeted by the director of the penitentiary, Claudia Clementi, and other officials.
Despite continuing to recover from double pneumonia, the pontiff
expressed regret for not being able to perform the annual ritual of
foot washing, a Christian tradition held every Holy Thursday.
The visit, although expected, had not been officially confirmed by the Holy See, since it depended on the state of health of the Pope, who is recovering from bilateral pneumonia that required 38 days of hospitalization until his discharge on March 23.
After his arrival, Pope Francis met with a group of about 70
prisoners. The supreme pontiff decided to maintain the tradition of
commemorating the Last Supper of Jesus with the inmates, as reported by the Vatican.
