Pope Leo XIV called for respect for the popular will of Venezuela during his meeting with the diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See, referring to the January 3 attack carried out by U.S. forces, which culminated in the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and the first lady, Cilia Flores.
“I renew my call to respect the will of the Venezuelan people and to safeguard the human and civil rights of all,” said the supreme pontiff.
The pontiff highlighted the need to direct the situation towards political agreements that privilege collective interest over particular positions, reported International Media.
Leo XIV warned of the increase in military actions in the Caribbean and the Pacific, stressing that the use of force is once again prevailing in international relations, violating the principle that, after the Second World War, prohibited intervention in the territories of other countries.
The Pope affirmed that dialogue mechanisms are being replaced by practices based on coercion and called for the re-establishment of channels that allow consensus between all parties.
