President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva said that in Brazil there is no forgiveness for those who attack democracy, one year after the coup acts of January 8, 2023, the Prensa Latina website reported.

“All those who financed, planned and executed the coup attempt must be punished in an exemplary manner. There is no forgiveness for those who attack democracy, against their country and against their own people,” Lula said at the National Congress during the ceremony entitled Firm Democracy.

He considered that forgiveness would sound like impunity “and impunity, as a safe conduit for new terrorist acts,” he warned.

He pointed out that the courage of parliamentarians, governors, ministers of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and legal soldiers ensured that this Monday it would be possible to celebrate, “the victory of democracy over authoritarianism.”

The Brazilian president also thanked security professionals, especially in Congress, who “even in the minority, refused to join the coup and risked their lives in the line of duty.”

During his speech, he also greeted “all Brazilians who put themselves above differences to say an eloquent no to fascism, because only in democracy can differences coexist in peace”.

He ratified the need to combat hunger and inequality in order to perfect democracy in Brazil. “A child without access to education will not learn the meaning of the word democracy. A father or mother at the traffic light, holding a sign written 'Help me for God's love', will not know what democracy is either. To perfect democracy is to recognize that democracy for the few is not democracy,” he reasoned.

On the other hand, he pondered cooperation between the powers after the attacks, the strengthening of democracy and pointed out that the country would sink into “economic and social chaos”, should the coup attempt materialize.

“The will of the Brazilian people expressed at the ballot box would have been stolen and democracy would have been destroyed (...) Our country would once again be isolated from the world, and the Amazon would soon be reduced to ashes,” he said.

The organizers specified that nearly 500 people participated in the event, including, in addition to Lula, the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, government ministers, judges of the Supreme Court, governors and legislators.

A year ago this Monday, supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro invaded and looted in Brasilia the headquarters of the National Congress, the Supreme Court and the Planalto Palace, headquarters of the Executive Branch, under requests for military intervention and in rejection of Lula's assumption of power.
