In the framework of the Day of the Artisanal Fisherman and Fisherman, this Thursday, the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, announced the launch of the Safe Fishing Plan, for the protection of the country's fishing community.

From the state of Sucre, the head of state pointed out that this initiative came about because of the risk of loss faced by fishermen at sea, so that GPS units will be gradually placed on fishing boats.

The Minister of Popular Power for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Juan Carlos Loyo, said that “artisanal fishing in the world has always been subject to fluctuations of risk. It's an art, it's knowledge, it's culture, but it also has a high level of risk in Venezuela. Approximately 300 cases of lost boats are reported per year,” he said

He indicated that Venezuela is on average below Latin America and the first 100 GPS are already arriving in the country, “which we are going to be placing on every boat, in every boat, of the fisherman. This GPS sends the signal to a system every 35 minutes, that system will be in the state (Sucre) and at the national level, where all the security agencies are going to be there, there will be coast guards and that way the boat will always be sending the signal,” he explained.

He added that this system “is tied to the name and surname of each one, so that you who also have your sail control in fishing ports already know that if the boat has not arrived in the next 24 hours as it was established, the registry will immediately search the system”.
