The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, commemorated 106 years since the planting of San José Gregorio Hernández, highlighting his devotion to the doctor of the poor, whom the Vatican officially recognized as the first saint in Venezuela.

“We are united on a significant date, when the town commemorates 106 years since the planting of San José Gregorio Hernández: not only a doctor for the poor and a scientist, but also one who cared for and cares for our people,” said the Head of State through his Telegram channel.

He also stated that the doctor, a native of the state of Trujillo, is a moral, ethical and spiritual leader who represents the hope and compassion of a supportive people

“Their dedication, humility and unwavering devotion to those most in need remind us of the importance of faith and prayer in our daily lives. In every corner of Venezuela, his legacy is manifested and encourages us to seek the path of love and healing,” he said.

In addition, he reaffirmed the gratitude of the People to Pope Francis, who did justice. “We are at peace and look forward with great happiness to the month of October to celebrate his official elevation to heaven as a symbol of faith for those of us who believe in his divine power. May Peace, Health and Love flourish in our Homeland, through the intercession of Saint Joseph Gregorio Hernández. Let us thank God for having given us such a noble instrument in our history and daily life. May his legacy live on forever!” , he said.

On the afternoon of June 29, 1919, José Gregorio went to the corner of Cardones to treat a patient whose state of health was in poor health. However, he couldn't get there with that person, because he was run over by Fernando Bustamante, a 28-year-old mechanic on the corner of Amadores, in La Pastora, Caracas. The driver immediately took him to Vargas Hospital, but when he found no one, he ran in search of Doctor Luis Razetti, who informed him shortly after that Hernández died at 54, from a fracture of the base of his skull.

José Gregorio Hernández was always considered by the people as a saint, whose miracles have been evident in many cases of Venezuelan patients and finally recognized by the Catholic Church.
