The head of state, Nicolás Maduro, commemorated this Thursday the 27th birthday of the revolutionary José Leonardo Chirinos.

Through his account on the social network X, the national president wrote: “270 years after the birth of the zambo José Leonardo Chirino, we honor the memory of the African people who, above subjugation and slavery, never abandoned the desire to be free, leaving their struggle, dignity and courage, as the historical legacy of our Venezuelanity.”

Chirinos was an Afro-descendant leader who led the insurrection in search of the establishment of the Republic and the abolition of slavery. He was arrested in August 1795 and transferred to Caracas, where the Royal Audience tried him and sentenced him to death for the crime of subversion on November 10, 1796.
