This Monday, January 20, the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, highlighted that Piedad Córdoba is a living story and was a citizen of Gran Colombia de Bolívar, on the occasion of a tribute paid at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies Rómulo Gallegos (CELARG), in Caracas, on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of her death.
In a telephone contact, broadcast by Venezolana de Televisión, the head of state, recalled Córdoba as a great Colombian woman who came to Congress with a courageous voice, facing persecution and dirty campaigns.
“Piedad is a living story, it is a story of the courageous people, the profound people of Colombia,” he said.
He said that he “managed to climb with his love and defend life just as he faced more difficult things.”
She also recognized her role as a facilitator of a humanitarian process. “She went around the world talking about the war, the kidnapped, the situation and their suffering for Colombia,” he said.
“Piedad proposed to Chávez that, please, he do something for Colombia and the Commander committed himself to that,” he added.
In this regard, the National President, referring to the current conflict in Catatumbo and the humanitarian aid offered by Venezuela to the Colombian people, specified that the image of Piedad Córdoba came to him. “When I ordered humanitarian aid, the first thing I thought of was Mercy. His suffering was taken out of him and converted it into messages of hope, of struggle,” he said.
“There is only one Piedad Córdoba. May his message and spirit always live,” said the head of state.
In the tribute to the first year of Piedad Córdoba's physical departure from CELARG, his tireless fight for human rights in Latin America, known for his courage and commitment to social causes, was highlighted.
