The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, highlighted this Friday the importance of ethics in the country's scientific community, and used Dr. Humberto Fernández-Morán as an example.

During the ceremony for the 1st anniversary of the National University of Sciences “Dr. Humberto Fernández-Morán”, the head of state stressed that “dedication, study, discipline, monitoring, belief in oneself, teamwork are important (...) But ethics are vital.”

He pointed out that the country's scientists and scientists must strengthen “the commitment to the human, the commitment to the good and above all the commitment to their Homeland, to love the Venezuelan Homeland above all else, to value their Homeland, to value their people, to value their history.”

In this regard, he praised the legacy of the great Venezuelan scientist Humberto Fernández-Morán. “He had to live abroad for many years (...) he was a victim of Hitler's hordes, of Nazism, he miraculously saved his life. But from where he was he always valued his history (...) he knew, felt and defended by his example the legacy of our Liberator Simon Bolivar”.

“One day they called you and said: 'Dr. Fernández Morán, you can win the Nobel Prize in Science this year, but the only requirement is that you renounce your Venezuelan nationality and assume American nationality'. Do you know what he said? 'Keep your Nobel Prize because I'll keep my Venezuelan nationality, '” said President Maduro.

In this regard, he criticized that “there are those who sell their country for a Nobel prize or for a thousand things”, but not “those who love their country, who are willing to give everything for their country”, like Fernández-Morán.
