This Friday, the peace process between the Government of Colombia led by Gustavo Petro and the guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN) was suspended, as announced by the head of state through his account on the social network X after the recent acts of violence that occurred in the Catatumbo region, in the northeast of the country.

“What the ELN has committed in Catatumbo are war crimes. The dialogue process with this group is suspended, the ELN has no will for peace,” wrote the Colombian president.

The Institute for Development and Peace Studies (INDEPAZ) in Colombia reported last Thursday the murder in the department of Norte de Santander of four signatories of the peace process in the country, alarming events that bring the number of fatalities to six in 2025.

Since the beginning of his term of office, the president had prioritized the search for “total peace”, a strategy that included negotiations with various armed groups in the country.

Recent events in Catatumbo appear to have undermined confidence in the ELN's willingness to move forward in this process.
