This Friday, the President of the Republic of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, assessed the start of the military operation “Catatumbo Lightning” announced by his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro.

“An anti-narcotics military operation has begun on the Colombian/Venezuelan border,” the president announced this Friday morning.

Likewise, Petro added: “We seek collaboration between armies in the fight against the National Liberation Army (ELN), a border without mafias must be the ultimate objective for the tranquility of the population, peace and sovereignty.”

Last Thursday, President Maduro stressed that the exercise covers the regions of the north of Táchira bordering the Colombian province of Norte de Santander, where there are clashes between armed factions for which the Government of Petro has declared a State of Internal Concussion.

The Sectorial Vice President for Politics, Public Security and Peace, Diosdado Cabello Rondón, recently reported that 200 mercenaries have been captured so far who have tried to attack Venezuela.

He also specified that “El Catatumbo is a region that has its Colombian and Venezuelan side, which is why nothing happens in our territory and the violence that is generated in the neighboring country was caused by Álvaro Uribe Vélez”.
