This Thursday, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded to Marco Rubio, the politician nominated by the president-elect of the United States (USA), Donald Trump, as a candidate for Secretary of State, on the insistence that drug trafficking cartels should be considered terrorists.
“Regarding the possible declaration of these criminal groups associated with terrorism, of the cartels, he also says that it has its complications due to the characteristics in which they operate, obviously we agree with this, declaring a terrorist group has many implications. I'm sticking with this part of the collaboration. We take him at his word,” said the head of state during a meeting with the media.
Russia Today (RT) explained that during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Rubio stated that the option of carrying out military action in Mexico to combat the cartels was open, although he warned that “obviously” it would not be the favorite measure of the next U.S. Government.
“I think there is a lot we can and will continue to do in close collaboration with our allies in Mexico. I believe that they too can do more to face this challenge, and my preference would be, from the perspective of the State Department, that we can work with Mexicans on this issue in a cooperative manner,” he added.
