This Thursday, the president of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, expressed a strong condemnation of the operation carried out by Israeli forces against the Global Sumud Flotilla, intercepted in international waters while transporting humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The head of state described the act as an act of “banditry” and questioned its legality within the framework of international law, during a meeting with leaders of the Justice and Development Party (AKP).
Erdogan stated that the purpose of the flotilla was to make visible the humanitarian situation in Gaza and to deliver supplies intended for the civilian population. He argued that the attack on the civilian mission is an example of the effort to block initiatives that seek to expose the consequences of the conflict in the Palestinian enclave.
“I condemn the banditry against the Global Sumud Flotilla, which started with the objective of drawing attention to the situation of children dying of hunger in Gaza and to deliver humanitarian aid to oppressed Palestinians,” he said.
In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye also issued a statement calling the operation an “act of terrorism” and a “serious violation of international law”.
The Foreign Ministry warned that the use of force in international waters puts the lives of civilians at risk and contravenes the rules of maritime and humanitarian law.
