President Gustavo Petro arrived this Wednesday, January 22, in the city of Jacmel (southeastern Haiti) for a visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation.
Hundreds of people gathered hours earlier around the airport to welcome Petro, who finally arrived at 3:50 local time at Jacmel airport, on the second visit of a head of state to Haiti since the increase in violence after William Rutto, president of Kenya, the country that leads the Multinational Security Support Mission.
Previously, as reported by the Presidency of the Dominican Republic, Petro arrived in Santo Domingo, at Las Américas International Airport, where he was greeted by the Dominican Vice President, Raquel Peña.
In Jacmel, which is adorned with Colombian flags and large banners, Petro will meet with Leslie Voltaire, who heads the Presidential Transitional Council of Haiti (CPT), as part of an agenda that also includes a binational Council of Ministers and a tour of several historic sites, including Simon Bolivar Square, who in the 19th century visited this city in search of help for the wars of independence in South America.
A cooperation protocol is also expected to be signed between Haiti and Colombia, which will cover trade, education, security and humanitarian aid.
