The first president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, arranged the presidential plane to facilitate the return of compatriots who were deported from the United States.
According to a statement issued by the New Granada government, this decision by Petro seeks to guarantee decent conditions for Colombians expelled by the Donald Trump administration.
In the same way, Bogotá assured that it is holding “active conversations” with the United States to seek agreements that ensure minimum conditions of respect and decent treatment for compatriots during deportation proceedings, recognizing them as subjects of rights.
In addition, Petro launched the “unified command on migration”, with the participation of the Office of the Ombudsman, the Foreign Ministry and the Presidency.
“This space aims to establish and review protocols that ensure the dignified treatment of deported Colombians, ensuring that procedures respect the human rights and integrity of each person,” said the statement.
On the other hand, the New Granada Head of State required the more than 15,000 Americans who remain illegal in Colombia to regularize their stay.
Unscrupulous blackmail
These actions by the Colombian government come after Donald Trump raised tariffs for Colombian products entering the United States to 50%, in retaliation for the refusal of the neighboring country to refuse to allow deportation flights.
In addition, the U.S. administration established a “travel ban and immediate revocation of visas for Colombian government officials and all allies and supporters,” which also extends to “all family members and supporters” of Petro's administration.
