The town of Puerto
Cabello, Carabobo state, celebrated the 154th anniversary of the Hammock Dance at
these Carnivals 2025, with the objective of strengthening the cultural identity of
the city, in addition to uniting tourists and locals alike.
According to
information from Venezolana de Televisión, during the event, Herman
Villanueva and the Drums of San Millán performed, in addition to the first fighter Nancy de Lacava, the mayor
of Puerto Cabello, Juan Carlos Betancourt, and his wife, María Daniela de Betancourt.
Specifically,
the San Millán neighborhood houses the Baile de La Hamaca, a cultural event
that combines music, theater, dance and song, transmitted from generation to generation.
During the celebration of the carnival festivities, its
inhabitants, bearers of this tradition, proudly represent this
tragicomedy that culminates at midnight on Carnival Tuesday.
Declared an
Asset of Cultural Interest of the Nation in 2018, the Hammock Dance
is a celebration that arrived in Puerto Cabello through trade with the
island of Curaçao and the smuggling that existed in the region. The community of San
Millán is preparing for this holiday, which consists of the wake
and burial of the dead, represented by a hammock adorned with flowers that is
hung on a long wooden stick.
