Nine political and social organizations in Puerto Rico sent a communication to the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, to express their concern about the increase in U.S. military activity in the Caribbean.

The organizations also question the reinforcement of military capabilities on the island, considering that such actions make Puerto Rico a platform “as a bridge and base of aggression against the sovereignty of sister peoples in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the destabilization of peace in the region.”

According to the document published on the Telesur website, the signatories stress that Washington's increased use of military installations contradicts previous announcements about the closure of bases and represents a setback for the Puerto Rican people's aspirations for self-determination.

The statement recalls that, for more than six decades, the United States has used Puerto Rican territories for military maneuvers, including bombing in areas close to communities, in particular in Culebra and Vieques, with serious repercussions on the health of its inhabitants and on local ecosystems.

Vivian Godineaux, of the Puerto Rico Bar Association, and Vanessa Ramos, of the American Association of Jurists, emphasized that the Puerto Rican population has historically expressed its rejection of these practices, mobilizing massively to demand an end to military operations on these islands.
