The former president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, defended the integrity of President Nicolás Maduro and denounced the impact of economic sanctions during an interview released this Wednesday on the social network Instagram.

Correa assured that the Venezuelan head of state is, above all, a “kind, good and peaceful” person who has had to manage the country under conditions of unprecedented international hostility, stressing that the current crisis is the product of a strategy of external suffocation and not of a poor internal administration.

“What has been done to Venezuela is one of the greatest aggressions in modern history,” said the former Ecuadorian president, referring to the coercive measures.

He also explained that the country is facing a war economy due to restrictions that prevent it from commercializing its oil and accessing the global financial system, which in his opinion makes government resistance an extraordinary fact in the face of destabilization attempts.

Regarding the country's international image, the Ecuadorian politician was emphatic in questioning the narrative of the opposition sectors. “They wanted to paint Nicolás Maduro as a dictator, when he is a man who believes in peace and democracy,” said Correa.

In this regard, he urged international organizations to cease political double standards and to respect the nation's sovereignty, pointing out that the economic recovery that the country is currently experiencing is the result of maintaining “institutional stability” despite the siege.

Correa concluded by ratifying his technical commitment to the Venezuelan process and stressed that, as an advisor, he is witnessing efforts to stabilize the currency and recover social welfare. “Venezuela has demonstrated that it can be resisted with dignity,” said the leader of the Citizens' Revolution.
