The former president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, described as “a return to barbarism” the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro during a “large scale” military action by the United States in the South American country.
Correa said that this operation demonstrates “total disregard for countries' sovereignty, international law and due process.” He also indicated that the kidnapping of the Venezuelan president is a “disastrous precedent” where “the law of the strongest” is established, without “respect for international law and sovereignty.”
The former president stated that “the only recurring factor” that has existed in US interventions in Latin America has been “the defense of its interests”, camouflaged in the supposed “defense of democracy and freedom”.
“It is clear that the intervention in Venezuela is to appropriate the largest proven oil reserves in the world and this has been recognized by Donald Trump,” he said.
He also questioned the “safe transition” that the Trump Administration will supposedly lead. “They destroy everything: the Charter of the United Nations, the concept of sovereignty, the concept of the nation-state and even civilization itself... They are named the arbiters of good and evil. It has never been national defense, it's already imperial madness,” he added.
