Torrential rains in Ecuador have left 11 dead and more than 72,000 people affected, according to the latest report from the National Secretariat for Risk Management (SNGR).

Among the fatalities are a minor and an adult, who lost their lives in a flood that occurred Friday night in the province of El Oro, near the border with Peru.

The SNGR report detailed that more than two thousand people have been affected, while nearly 19,000 homes have been damaged and 61 have been destroyed.

For her part, presidential candidate Luisa González expressed her support for the victims and reiterated the need for the Government to allocate resources to local authorities, Telesur reports.

The areas most affected by rainfall are Guayas, Manabí and Los Ríos, which together with Esmeraldas and Santa Elena remain under a state of emergency.
