This Wednesday, the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, declared that he could stop gas supplies to European markets and go to more promising markets.

During an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin, Putin justified the idea by explaining that the European Union (EU) plans to “impose restrictions on the purchase of Russian gas, including liquefied natural gas, within a month. And one year from now, in 2027, there will be new restrictions, leading to a total ban.”

“Now other markets are opening up. And perhaps it is more profitable for us to stop supplies to the European market right now. Go to those markets that are opening up and gain a foothold there,” he stressed.

He also stressed that his Government, together with Russian companies, will analyze the issue of natural gas supplies to promising commercial platforms, although the final decision has not yet been taken.

The president of the Federation clarified that the current situation in the European market is, “first of all, the result of the erroneous policy of the European authorities in the field of energy (...) There is no political background here, only business,” he said.
