The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, said that Moscow is willing to collaborate to prevent a new escalation around Iran, given the news of a possible US military operation on Iranian territory.
Lavrov has reacted to statements by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who has assured that a “great army” is moving to the region. “We are willing to contribute to prevent further deterioration,” said the Foreign Minister in an interview with TGRT and the daily Türkiye.
He recalled that Russia is trying to prevent a repetition of the scenario of June 13, when the Iranian nuclear facilities of Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz, under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA), were attacked by Israeli and American forces. The head of Russian diplomacy expressed his hope that “common sense and political calculation will prevail”, although he acknowledged that several analyses foresee an attack against Iran.
Lavrov indicated that Türkiye shares the intention to act as a mediator and stressed that Moscow maintains stable ties with both Israel and Iran, offering its “good offices” to reduce tensions.
The internal Iranian context is still marked by the protests that began at the end of December due to the economic deterioration. The authorities attributed the mobilizations to actions promoted by the United States and Israel. On January 15, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, announced that the riots had ended. According to official data, there were 3,117 dead, while human rights organizations in exile estimated between 3,400 and 6,400 dead, in addition to thousands injured and more than 25,000 arrested.
