This Wednesday, the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Maria Zakharova , during her program on Sputnik radio, described as “crazy” the fact that the Canadian Foreign Minister, Mélanie Joly, spoke during the recent G20 summit about defending the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.
“Canada has problems with its own independence and territorial integrity,” Zajárova said, recalling that during his two months in the White House, the US president, Donald Trump, has constantly “been declaring that he does not perceive Canada as an independent state, but as the 51st state of the United States.”
According to a quote from Russia Today (RT), the spokeswoman stressed that “this is not a joke or a linguistic slip”, since Trump, like his team, “constantly emphasizes that, since Canada, it is not a sovereign and independent state”.
In this context, Zakharova questioned why the Canadian foreign minister did not tell the US representative present at the summit “all those things that were said about Ukraine (...) but in relation to her country”.
